Turning Funding into Opportunity
FC Twenty 11 Football Club
What happens when a club combines ambition, planning, and a strong funding strategy? More than $500,000 in opportunities.
THE CHALLENAGE
When I first started working with FC Twenty 11, the club was doing what many community sports clubs do — working incredibly hard with limited resources. There was a strong volunteer base, dedicated coaches, and a clear vision for growing football in the community. But like many grassroots organisations, funding was always a challenge - historically around $50,000–$60,000 a year, most of it covering immediate costs rather than long-term growth.
"More than $500,000 secured in external funding over five years."
A MORE STRATEGIC APPROACH
Over a three-year period, I worked alongside the club to develop a more strategic approach to funding. Rather than applying for grants as they arose, we built a clear funding programme aligned with the club's goals, budgets, and priorities - identifying opportunities, developing strong supporting documentation, preparing detailed budgets, managing accountability requirements, and building relationships with funding organisations.
THE RESULTS
Over the past five years, FC Twenty 11 has secured more than $500,000 in external funding -supporting football programmes, coaching initiatives, equipment, facility costs, player development, and community participation. More importantly, that funding has helped the club keep growing and investing in its people.
MORE THAN APPLICATIONS
My role has gone well beyond writing applications. It's meant working closely with club leaders to understand their priorities, develop realistic budgets, gather supporting information, meet accountability requirements, and make sure each funding request tells a clear story about the difference the club makes in its community.
WHAT IT REALLY ENABLED
What I'm most proud of isn't the dollar figure - it's what those dollars have enabled. More players on the field, more opportunities for young people, better support for volunteers and coaches, stronger programmes, and a club in a much stronger position than it was five years ago. Funding alone doesn't build a successful club, but combined with good people, strong leadership, and a clear vision, it creates opportunities that wouldn't exist otherwise.
THE OUTCOME - AT A GLANCE
What that support has delivered for the club
